Artificial Intelligence (AI)+ Big Data: Hype and Reality

摘要

Big Data became a hot topic about two decades ago in both industry and the research community. For the most part, those developments were initially triggered by the requirements of Web 2.0 (e-commerce and social media) companies. Both technical and non-technical issues continued to fuel the rapid pace of developments in the Big Data space. Open source and non-traditional software entities also played key roles in the latter. As it happens with any emerging technology, there was a fair amount of hype that accompanied the work being done in the name of Big Data. The set of clear-cut distinctions that were made initially between Big Data systems and traditional database management systems got blurred as the needs of the broader set of (real world) users and developers came into sharper focus, and the hype subsided. In the last decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has reemerged after having been out of fashion for a long time. Initially, it was fueled by developments around Deep Learning (DL). Of late, it is on fire with the popularity of Large Language Models (LLMs), and with the founding of startups like Anthropic, DeepSeek, OpenAI and xAI. Major vendors like Alibaba, AWS, Google, IBM, Meta and Nvidia have pivoted to focus on AI related work. In this talk, I will survey the developments in the AI and Big Data spaces and try to distill reality from the hype!
