Web3 Metaverse: A User's Perspective

* Students who enroll in DSAA 6102 must attend the seminar in classroom.

Metaverse became a topic of public concern in late 2021. However, a little-known fact is that the term “metaverse” has been widely used in the Web3 community since 2017, when its members started to advertise their vision of the decentralized virtual world. In this talk, the speaker will present the community, layers, recent developments, and future trends for the Web3 metaverse. The speaker will first review the history of metaverse development and introduce the different views from multiple research communities to clarify the importance of Web3 research in this area. Afterward, the speaker will study industrial Web3 metaverse cases, including land projects and profile picture NFT projects, to motivate future directions. Furthermore, the speaker will present recent research outcomes from a user’s perspective.
